Machine Construction

The KA hammer is constructed with a minimum of welding. The ram and anvil are machined from 1040 material on a CNC milling machine. The cylinders are swaged into the ram with expansion collets. The action of the machine is constantly tightening this connection. The anvil cap is heat shrunk onto the anvil column. The column is 5" round solid steel. The base is welded from the bottom to a vee groove in the column. This causes the warpage to pull the base downwards so it rests on its edge for stability. The replaceable guides are 6.5-inch long bronze bushings set in epoxy grout. A unique feature of the KA hammer is that the ram moves into the guides as it strikes. Most hammers have the ram extending out of the guides as the blow is struck, often causing a sideward motion that will cause a forging to roll over and go out of square.

Dovetailed & Keyed Dies

The dies are machined from 4140 steel. The taper for the keys is in the ram and anvil so that the die has parallel surfaces and is an easy part to make. The die has only one dovetail surface; the key has a double taper, one in length, one in height. We will supply finished dies or blank unhardened stock for you to finish. A 12" die blank, enough to make a set of 6" dies, is $100.00

Another handy die is the insert die holder. This die accepts smaller dies, which are extremely low cost. A 12" section of diestock is $40.00 in 4140 material, and $20.00 in mild steel. The mild steel inserts are used for welding bases for bending and forming tooling such as collaring tools.

Accurate Die Alignment

To insure die alignment, locating pegs hold the dies in a fixed position in the dovetail of the ram and anvil. When the machine is made, a double-ended die is used as a fixture to hold the ram and anvil parallel and vertical. Dies can be changed quickly by removing keys and will be in accurate alignment with matching edges. Dovetail and key assembly is the forging industry standard for holding dies. While bolt-on dies work well, nothing surpasses the ease and convenience of keyed dies.

Standard Off-The-Shelf Parts

As much as possible we have used stock components. The air valve, seals and cylinder bushings are stock items easily available locally.

Tooling Hole

A 5/8-inch, drilled and tapped hole is on a flat surface milled on the right hand side of the anvil. This is provided to clamp on quick-change tooling.
